A Brief History
The Early Years
Beginning in 1939-40, Rev. H.P. Fast, then of Steinbach, Manitoba, met periodically with several families in the home of K.D. Friesen on St Anne’s Rd in Winnipeg. Among those who assembled for worhisp services were the Herman Doerksen family, the Albert Fry family, the Bill Toews, Bill Dyck , and the K.D. Friesen family. After a time, the group, now under the leadership of Mr. A. P. Toews, met at the Bethel Mission Church located at the corner of Sherbrook St and Ellice Ave. In the years just prior to 1944, the group[ met at the I.O.D.E. Hall on Sargent Avenue.
Permanent Locations
In 1944, the group purchased church property at 232 Nassau St. The building on the site was renovated in 1953-54. With the sale of the property, work began in the spring of 1957 on the present building at 465 Osborne St, on the corner of Brandon Avenue, and the congregation officially relocated on December 8, 1957.
During the winter and spring of 1963-64, extensive renovations of the basement, balcony, class rooms, and stairways was undertaken. A second renovation project, expanding the facility to its present size, was started in 1972.
The congregation was officially organized as a Church in December 31, 1948, with 25 charter members. By 1954 there were 44 members, in 1968 there were 108 members, and the current membership (1999-2000) is 60.
